Waxing Advice

Before Your Wax…

So you’ve booked a wax. Here’s a couple of tips to easy the pain and increase the longevity of the hair free feeling.

Make sure your hair is long enough to remove completely from the roots, it should be at least 0.5 centimeters. If you’ve shaved the area within the last few weeks it might take a couple of regular waxes to get your hair into a cycle of growth that allows the most effective wax finish.

If you’re really worried about the pain, and haven’t had waxing before then you can take pain killers before your appointment. This can help reduce the surface discomfort. Also be aware that during your menstruation cycle you main be for sensitive to pain and redness.

After Your Wax…
Immediately After Your Wax.

It’s normal immediately after your wax for a little bit of redness and a prickly heat type rash to appear. This should disappear after a few hours and is normally due to a histamine reaction. Because waxing removes the hair at the root, it’s important that you keep the area clean and bacteria free. This means:

No sunbathing for at least 12 hours, have your waxing done at least the day before you go on holiday.

No swimming in a chlorinated pool for 24 hours, this includes spa baths or saunas.

Avoid applying any topical lotions for at least 12 hours, fragrances and other lubricants can cause a burning sensation.

Also avoid touching the waxed area to ensure it remains bacteria free.

Use a tea tree oil based product and apply to the area if needed for it’s anti-bacterial qualities.

Waxing is not recommended within 24 hours (before or after) of any other heat treatment e.g. steam, sauna, sunbed, sunbathing, swimming, exercise or self tanning application.

3-10 Days after waxing.

As your skin closes over the follicles, the next consideration is to ensure you prevent ingrown hairs. This is when new, often softer hair can get trapped under the skin.

Use a soft brush or exfoliating glove to gently buff the area every 2-3 days. This is particularly important after about day 3 through to about the 10 day mark. It doesn’t need to be hard scrubbing, just a gentle exfoliation.

How long will your wax last?

If you’re a first-time or occasional waxer you will likely notice some new hair growth within 2-3 weeks due to the naturally staggered hair growth cycle. This part of regrowth will be sparse, about one-third of the hair normally present. Soon after the remaining hair will begin growing in.

Regular waxing will leave the area hair free for 3 – 6 weeks. Over time the density of hair in the waxed area may start to decrease as well.

Pre and Post Tanning advice

Before Your Tan
• Exfoliate and moisturise the night before the tan (not on the day of the tan) paying particular attention to elbows, knees, ankles and problem dry areas. Make sure your exfoliator doesn’t contain any oil as oil will act as a barrier so the tan will not take.
• Paint finger nails and toenails with a clear varnish, especially if they are acrylics or gels.
• Wax/shave at least 24/48 hours prior to treatment. This allows the pores time to close. Dotting in pores may appear if not adhered to.
• Do not moisturise or use skin lotions on the day of your tan.
• Remove make-up and deodorant before your tan, any perfumed products can turn the tan green on application.

After your Tan
• Wear dark loose clothing after your treatment. Tight clothing or underwear may cause marks.
• Wear flip-flops or loose fitting shoes.
• Do not shower or bathe for at least 8 hours (the development time).
• Do not exercise or swim during the development period.
• Try not to touch your skin during the development time. If you do see any streaks from water spillage or clothing rubbing use a buffing mit to even the development or a fragrant free lotion to soften any areas than are darker or patchy, i.e. wrists, hands and ankles.

Top tip – if leaving on overnight wear loose socks over your hands in bed and sleep on a dark towel to protect you sheets.
